Paddington: No Country for Old Bears

A punctilious Peruvian bear arrives in rural Texas with a coin, a suitcase of marmalade, and an unyielding code that turns every polite encounter into a fatal coin toss. In the sun-baked Texas borderlands, itinerant welder Llewelyn Moss discovers a battered brown suitcase beside a drug-deal massacre. Expecting cash, he finds only jars of thick orange marmalade. That night a soft knock echoes at his motel door. Paddington Bear stands on the threshold, duffel coat immaculate, red hat slightly askew, holding a single silver shilling. “I’m afraid someone has taken my marmalade,” he says with Edwardian courtesy. “Would you care to guess which side the coin lands on—heads you return it, tails you keep it forever?” Llewelyn guesses wrong. The bear’s “hard stare” is the last thing he sees. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, a laconic old lawman, arrives at each scene to find victims neatly arranged beside empty jam jars and a single coin. Paddington moves through truck stops and desert motels like a polite force of nature, asking every witness the same gentle question before flipping. Ed Tom tracks the bear to an abandoned filling station at dawn. The two men sit across a metal table. Paddington offers the coin. Ed Tom refuses to call it. The bear nods, almost sadly, packs his suitcase, and walks into the blinding light. Ed Tom remains seated, staring at the untouched shilling, the desert wind carrying the faint scent of Seville oranges.
